Welcome to the website of the Northern Ireland Bowel Cancer Screening Programme

The Bowel Cancer Screening Programme commenced roll-out across Northern Ireland in April 2010. It offers bowel cancer screening using the Faecal Occult Blood (FOBt) test to both men and women aged 60-69 (upper age limit will be increasing to 71 in April 2012). The aim of the screening programme is to detect bowel cancers at an early stage, when there are better chances of effective treatment.

The Northern Ireland Bowel Screening Programme

Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women.

• There are more than 1,000 new diagnoses and over 400 deaths each year in Northern Ireland.

• The lifetime risk of developing bowel cancer is one in twenty for women and one in sixteen for men.

• Around 80 per cent of bowel cancers are in people aged over 60.

If bowel cancer is detected at a very early stage treatment can be 90% successful.
