The Breast Screening Programme is for eligible women age 50 and above. Those aged 50-64 will be invited every 3 years. Those over 64 will be screened if they contact the screening office. It is hoped shortly to have an age expansion in the programme and those aged 64 – 69 will be included in the invited.
The programme is operating successfully in the province with screening centres at Linenhall Street, Craigavon Hospital, Antrim Hospital and Altnagelvin Hospital. Last year there were 1074 cancers of the breast presenting in Northern Ireland of which 269 were diagnosed at screening. Early detection through screening ensures the best treatment and best possible outcomes are available and significantly reduces the number of deaths from breast cancer each year.
